Dial-up connections are a thing of the past, but many people continue to rely on this type of internet connection, because it is simple and inexpensive. DSL connection has been introduced for some time, but has always been expensive and provides speeds that are not nearly enough. Taking into account the importance of living everyday to the internet these days, with only two options for getting online seems rather bleak. However, the last two years, was born in a different service, known as the Internet via broadband cable. This service has proved a very popular service because it has none of the problems and hassles associated with Dial-ups and DSLs.

Broadband Cable Internet is born of the knowledge of infrastructures that provides cable television also had the ability to provide Internet services. Internet and digital media are reliant on digital television transmissions so they have similar infrastructures for both services. With broadband cable Internet, speed is a priority. For example, when other types of services that offer a few Mbps for full speed some companies will offer 10 Mbps upwards. This speed difference is due to different technologies that provide services such as DSL, and those who are broadband Internet cable. As technology becomes more advanced, cable internet will still be able keep up with other types of services in terms of speed.

For basic information about you Internet, cable high speed Internet services to provide more than enough speed to make it even more the bandwidth applications, but also enough speed to provide each household member, at the same time to get enough bandwidth for the network. Some of the most common usage of the Internet is to check email, share data and pictures with peers and family, and online entertainment. Online entertainment requires very fast connections but cable connections offer plenty of speed.

As broadband cable internet gains momentum, there will probably be early in the day in which other Internet connections become obsolete. Internet via broadband cable offers high quality and because it relies on existing infrastructure, it is convenient for all users.

Internet access installation in the past used to be a complex procedure. The process, filled with highly technical jargon would scare away an absolute newbie. Getting in contact with an internet provider consist of numerous phone calls to request for the service. Then comes the waiting game, you just can’t tell if the technicians sent to configure your internet would ever come or have completely forgotten about you.

Now, with the technological advancements in internet connections, ISPs now provide do-it-yourself kits for the consumer to have immediate internet access. Unlike in the past, the day you subscribe usually means the same day you get connected.

In Cable Internet one will need the following items:

Ethernet card or USB port installed in your computer. All computers manufactured in the recent years have these parts so you don’t have to worry.

Cable modem. Now this will be provided by your internet provider.

Ethernet cable or USB cable. This cable is used to connect the modem to the computers USB port or Ethernet port

A coaxial cable. This cable usually found in televisions is where cable internet gets its name. The cable must be of adequate length.

Safety First

First, turn your computer off and unplug it from the wall socket. This is obviously to protect you from any mishaps that might happen like being electrocuted or damaging your hardware. Do not attempt to tinker with it while it is plugged.

The Cable Modem

Connect the coaxial cable to the cable modem. This cable is the thick round one that is used in cable televisions. Connect one end of the cable to the “cable modem” and the other end to the cable socket usually located on the walls. Most homes and apartments have these wall sockets installed if not, contact the internet service provider, their technician will install it for you.

Ethernet Cable/USB cable

Now connect one end of your Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of your pc. This cable looks like a telephone cable only bigger. Connect the Ethernet cables other end to the “cable modem”. You can also use a USB cable to connect the “cable modem” to your computer just find the USB port then slide it in. this will not require excessive force.

Power Up The Modem

Provide power to your modem by plugging it in an electrical socket. It is even better to plug it in an AVR (automatic voltage regulator), which is then plugged in the electrical socket in the wall.

When the modem is turned on, should see several, usually four, blinking lights which represent your connection.

Testing

Power up your computer, upon starting your internet browser the settings would usually be configured automatically. If not, use the settings provided by the ISP so that your browser has connection. Once connected, you can now enjoy the speed of cable internet.

What would life be without the internet? A scary thought I know. Years ago when the internet is in its infancy, access to online content was not so much of an issue for the average person but now that almost all aspects of our lives are interwoven with cyberspace, gaining the proper access to the online community means everything especially to those whose livelihood depended on it. Our internet providers now become our gateway, the thin line that connects us with almost anyone around the globe.

As the online community grew in size so did the online content. Years ago, the very few internet enthusiasts would never have imagined what the internet has to offer today, whole movies being streamed, staggering volumes of images and audio files being shared. And the trend shows that the size and amount of these contents would continue to rise. Without the internet speed to keep up, one would definitely fall behind.

Cable internet achieved with the use of the same wires that provide cable TV is considered the fastest of all the internet technologies. In terms of peak performance, cable internet is faster than DSL. Cable supports around 30 Mbps of speed which continue to improve, while most types of DSL will not even approach this speed. South Korea has the fastest internet connection on average with 18.36 Mbps, which is way ahead of Hong Kong which is ranked second and Japan ranked third. This feat achieved through the use of internet cable is truly impressive.

This chart although theoretical, mirrors the differences of speed of each internet access technology in real situations. This still show the superiority of a cable connection compared to others. With this kind of speed file sharing becomes more convenient. File transfers that would normally take hours to finish is now accomplished in minutes.

Despite the 1996 Telecommunications Act that guaranteed better service and competition when hunting for high-speed internet providers – most commonly referred to through telephone lines as DSL – it looks like the competition is about to seriously dwindle. A monopoly on these services may soon explode, which is bad news for consumers. At least, that is one half of the argument.

This news comes from the Federal Communications Commission: the FCC is planning to classify DSL (digital subscriber lines) as information services instead of telecommuncation services. A move like this puts DSL in the same category as email and voicemail. This means fewer Internet service providers, which boils down to fewer choices for buyers and less pricing competition.

Current providers, such as Qwest and Verizon, resell their services to other competitors and Internet service providers. The new deregulation proposition means they will no longer have to do this. Providers may also acquire the power to name the Internet service provider that customers must use, such as MSN. Again, this takes away consumer choices.

On the other hand, even though the competition may soon wane between DSL providers, there will still be room for competition between avenues of connection. In addition to DSL, customers can use cable and satellite connections. As these different avenues compete, services should improve and begin price-matching.

Another note on the positive side of this debate is that telephone companies have been reigned in by rules and regulations that often increase their cost and risk in order to provide these services right now, so the new deregulation proposition would free them of these concerns.

Only time will tell the effect that deregulation will have on the masses.

One of the most popular and widely sought services with respect to internet is cable internet. This particular service is believed to offer extremely fast internet speed and the same is done by using the cable television wires. The dial-up modems that were earlier being used by many to access the internet are now being substituted by broadband cable modems. Everyone who works on the internet wishes to have extremely high speed. This increasing demand for high speed that is augmenting day by day for supporting many sophisticated features like video streaming, audio streaming, live video etc. Has as a result made cable internet cheaper.

Cable internet providers in many places of the world are offering high speed internet at low prices per month. By using cable internet, high speed data is transmitted over cables called coaxial cables and these are the ones used to supply signals for cable television to houses.

This novel technology utilizes certain channels that are specifically reserved for transferring data. A bundle of coaxial cables can be fixed in a bigger sized cable to make installation easy and at the same time increase the speed at which the data would be transmitted in metro cities.

Before internet gained popularity, some basic services of mobile telephony were being offered by the industry players of telecommunication. With the passage of time, a wide spectrum of services right from video-telephony to interactive TV evolved as the variety of services that cable internet providers offer and all at an extremely low monthly fee. In terms of speed, cable internet is very swift than the conventional dial-up modems of olden times. The reason for this extremely high speed is the sharing of bandwidth with other similar service providers.

Incredible speed is a common promise that most cable internet providers offer to the customers. Cable internet in most cities is either as fast at 60 Mbps or is extremely slow at 256 Kbps. This drastic variation in speed is either due to the choice of the cable internet provider or the specific system chosen by the customer to fit individual budget.

One significant aspect to be borne in mind before choosing a cable internet provider is the fact that although extremely high levels of internet speed is promised by the service provider, actual experience while working may not be the same as it is dependent on various aspects.

Aspects like the distance of the cable from the service provider or the speed of the processor are all important factors. If the network is shared by a couple of households, then the speed may become slower.
